WELLNESS FOR DEGENERATES

We all know the deal with sugar – it’s bad. Obesity and disease-causing, bad. So how do you cut down on this sweet white powder, which in the day-to-day life of a hard-livin’ degenerate (or American life in general) is seemingly inescapable?

Like most vice-ridding goals in life, it starts with small moves. I started by replacing the processed dunes I dumped into my coffee with raw honey. Almost instantly, I noticed a change in my morning energy level; no crash a couple hours later, and a banana or apple with almond butter conquered any afternoon sluggishness.

Then, I tackled booze. Wine, whiskey or a few beers are spectacular moves of decompression after work, but they were also spiking my sugar levels. According to MedicineNet.com, “excessive alcohol consumption can decrease insulin’s effectiveness. One study showed that 45% to 70% of people with alcoholic liver disease had either glucose intolerance or diabetes.”

Now I’m a weekend warrior…aside from the two fingers of whiskey I had Tuesday night (it’s normally four or six). Again, baby steps.

Sugar is a drug. Just like pot, vodka, and smack. As a drug, it negatively impacts our entire being in more ways than we realize. So start small, and work your way up. Soon, you’ll be digging yourself out of that snowy, sugary hole of delicious diseased desolation.
