This ain’t just another one of them beard and mustache competitions—The Facial Hair Fiasco, where
Boston’s finest and hairiest face off in a sea of hirsuteness,
is less runway and more get-together featuring a bunch of finely groomed men. (And women!)
“I hadn’t been to many of these types of competitions, and it seems like it might just be a parade of dudes walking across the stage. I wanted it to be more of a party,” said Fiasco organizer Peter Boyd of TallBoy Industries.
And what goes exceptionally well with beards is rock ‘n roll, beer and whiskey, which will be provided by bearded bands (Coyote Kolb and Township), PBR and Jim Beam, respectively.
Winners will be crowned in six categories: Full Beard Natural (no product), Full Beard Groomed (use of gels and aids allowed), Freestyle Moustache, Freestyle Beard (when a beard is shaped like clay—think beards molded into sailboats and bridges … seriously), Partial Beard, and Fake Beard (where beard-loving women get creative with arts and crafts). The judges, all of whom are facial hair experts in their own right, include Sandy Poirier of Shag Salon, Bert Mayer of the Boston Beard Bureau and Carmen O’Connor of Bodega Girls.
Beard and mustache growers, some of whom have won previous contests and were on Whisker Wars, are trekking from Connecticut, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Virginia to enter their facial hair.
While the competition is serious, everyone who can grow a beard is already a winner, and those of us without can still enjoy it too, said Boyd (who sports a long, illustrious red beard).
“I definitely wanted our event to be more of a celebration of facial hair
because I run into guys on the street who say, ‘Aw man, I can’t grow a beard’ and I’m like, come anyway, it’s gonna be an awesome party.”
